🌻Chapter 1:The" SANU" Connection

KHUSHI'S POV

A strange, unnamed unease had been settling in my stomach since morning, but I couldn't place it. Nerves, I tried to tell myself, gripping the steering wheel a little tighter as I pulled up to the familiar gates of the mansion. It had been too long since I'd visited Bhai, Vahini (his wife), Aai, Baba, and my sweet little Nick.

Just as I stepped out of the car, the memory of Bhai's call from earlier flashed through my mind.

Flashback: the phone call His voice, a familiar rumble, crackled through the speaker. "Sanu, where are you, baby? I've been waiting forever. When are you finally coming home? I'm waiting!"

"I'm coming soon, Bhai," I replied,smiling.

"Okay, baccha. Waiting. Come soon. Bye, love you."

"Yes, bye! Love you more," I whispered, hanging up.

.Present

I was heading up the long drive, eager to see him.

(To be clear, Bhai isn't related by blood-he is my brother from another mother-but his love, and the love of his entire family, is deeper than any tie. They're my refuge. I love Nick, my cutie-pie nephew, more than anything.)

The guard opened the gate and wished me good morning. I nodded and rang the bell.

Vahini threw the door open, a bright smile on her face. "You came finally! I was waiting for you!"

I went straight for a hug, embracing her tightly. She patted my back, then pulled back to peck my forehead.

"Hello, princess," a familiar booming voice echoed from thehall.

I turned to see Baba (Bhai's dad) walking toward me. "I missed you so much, Baba! I'm so glad I could make it today."

I gave him a big hug before moving on to Aai (Bhai's mom). "I love you, Aai."

She hugged me close. "I love you, baccha."

Next was Nick. I swooped him up, twirling him high in my arms. He giggled-a sound I cherished. "My baby!"

"Yeah, yeah, meet the rest. I never get a turn," Bhai grumbled playfully from the archway.

I laughed and ran straight for him, engulfing myself in his strong arms. "Oh, please, Bhai. You know there is no one like you to me. I love you the most of all. I missed you! You didn't see me in three days-I'm angry!"

"I'm so sorry, Sanu. I was so busy. But I promise, it won't happen again."

I nodded, hugging him even tighter.

We all settled down and chatted. I told them about my studies; bothBaba and Bhai, being top doctors in their fields, understood the stress and always motivated me. I just loved being here. I was their princess, and everyone treated me that way. Bhai genuinely considered me his first child; even Nick, his own son, came second.

(He calls me Sanu because he'd always wanted a girl and planned to name her Saanvi. Since that didn't happen, he calls me his Sanavi-his Sanu. I am so glad for the affection I get from this family.)

Just then, as we were all laughing, the front door swung open again. A shadow fell across the polished marble floor.

"Khushuuu!" a voice cried out-one that made the breath catch in my throat.

I whirled around, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs, utterly shocked by the sight of the person standing there.
